So, you're afraid you've bricked your router. Don't worry, there are a number of things you can try to get your router working again before giving up and living with the fact that your router is now a paperweight.

It is also unfortunately possible to configure your router in ways which make it dead to the world. These techniques may be useful in these cases also.

Before you continue below, make sure you've first tried a hard reset to revive your router:




1.Disconnect the router from UTP cables (not the power cable).

2.Push reset button for 30 secs.

3.Without releasing reset button, disconnect power cord.

4.Hold the reset button for another 30 secs.

5.Replug the power cord.

6.Still hold the reset button for another 30 secs.

7.Release the reset button and give the router about 10 secs to resettle.

8.Disconnect power cord for another 10 secs and then reconnect.

9.All should be in default settings now.

This procedure is usually called 30/30/30 reset.



If the power light blinks in a neverending way, the 30/30/30 reset has no effect. Go to the Windows section of this page to see the reset-from-scratch procedure

You can use wireless router with DD-WRT as a wireless adapter for Xbox free

This tutorial will show you how to use a wireless router with the DD-WRT firmware installed as a wireless router for and Xbox or Xbox 360.
Hardware you will need:

• Wireless router with DD-WRT firmware installed (Client)
• Wireless router (Host)
• Xbox or Xbox 360
• PC
• Ethernet cord (optional)

Software you will need:

• Internet Explorer

You will have to configure the the Client router to be a wireless receiver which will allow it to receive the wireless signal from the Host and bridge it to the 4 Ethernet ports on the router. I chose to do this rather than purchase an Xbox wireless adapter because I could purchase a router (~$50) for around half the cost of the Xbox wireless adapter (~$100). This tutorial assumes you are using a Linksys WRT-54G/GL/GS router as the Host and an internet service provider (ISP) that provides a dynamic IP via DHCP.
Obtain Host router info:

1. Connect PC to Host router via Ethernet cord or wirelessly
2. Open Internet Explorer and navigate to 192.168.1.1 (this will open the Host router’s web interface)
   NOTE: You will be presented with a login prompt, use the credentials you set when configuring the router, if you cannot remember what they are, press the Reset button for 30 seconds, username and password will be reset to factory defaults (username: (blank), password: admin)
3. Select the Setup->Basic Setup tab and save the Host router’s Local IP, Subnet Mask, and Starting IP Address (usually 192.168.1.1, 255.255.255.0, 192.168.1.100)
4. Select the Wireless->Basic Wireless Settings tab and save the router’s SSID
5. Select the Wireless->Wireless Security tab and save the security info, if used
6. Select the Status->Router tab and save the DNS 1, and DNS 2 values

Configure Client router to receive wireless signal:

1. Connect PC to Client router via Ethernet cord or wirelessly
2. Open Internet Explorer and navigate to 192.168.1.1 (this will open the Host router’s web interface)
   NOTE: You will be presented with a login prompt, use the credentials you set when configuring the router, if you cannot remember what they are, press the Reset button for 30 seconds, username and password will be reset to factory defaults (username: root, password: admin)
3. Select the Wireless->Basic Settings tab
4. Change Wireless Mode to Client, change Wireless Network Name (SSID) to value saved from step 4 above, then press the Save Settings button
5. Select Wireless->Wireless Security tab
6. Enter wireless security settings from step 5 above and press the Save Settings button, if applicable
7. Select Setup->Basic Setup tab
8. Change Internet Connection Type.Connection Type to Static IP
9. Change Internet Connection Type.Internet IP Address to 192.168.1.2 (or any IP between Host’s Local IP (192.168.1.1) and Host’s Staring IP Address (usually 192.168.1.100))
10. Change Internet Connection Type.Subnet Mask to value from step 3 above (usually 255.255.255.0)
11. Change Internet Connection Type.Gateway to Host router’s Local IP from step 3 above (usually 192.168.1.1)
12. Change Internet Connection Type.Static DNS 1 to Host router’s Local IP from step 3 above (usually 192.168.1.1)
13. Change Internet Connection Type.Static DNS 2 to DNS 1 value from step 6 above
14. Change Internet Connection Type.Static DNS 3 to DNS 2 value from step 6 above
15. Change Router IP.Local IP Address to 192.169.2.2
16. Change Router IP.Subnet Mask to 255.255.255.0
17. Change Router IP.Gateway to 192.168.2.2
18. Change Router IP.Local DNS to Host router’s Local IP from step 3 above (usually 192.168.1.1)
19. Press the Save Settings button, you will get Settings are successful screen, then press the Close button
20. Go to Start->Run, then type cmd, and press Enter
21. Type ipconfig /release, then press Enter
22. Type ipconfig /renew, then press Enter
23. Open Internet Explorer and navigate to 192.168.2.2 to make sure the settings are saved
    NOTE: notice the new IP address for the Client router, it will be the value specified in step 15

Any device plugged into the Client router’s ports labeled 1-4 will now be able to connect to the internet. The Client router’s wireless signal will not be visible to any wireless adapter.
If you have a modded Xbox running Xbox Media Center (XBMC) connected to the Client router and wish to connect to a shared folder on a PC connected to the Host router, you may have to connect by entering the IP address of the PC sharing the folder rather than browsing to the PC.

DD-WRT is a Free Open Source Firmware for Wireless Routers

Some low-cost wireless routers sold today use Linux as the embedded operating system. This has allowed hackers to create a free, open-source version firmware called DD-WRT that greatly extend the capabilities of consumer grade routers. Some features that are included are only available in enterprise-grade routers that cost well over $100.

DD-WRT Features

Some of the features that are available with DD-WRT as of V24 SP2 or later include:

• Bandwidth monitoring

• PPTP
• Quality of Service (QoS)
• Samba/CIFS client

• SPI Firewall

• Wake On Lan

Most wireless routers are not compatible with DD-WRT. If DD-WRT is desired, consult the DD-WRT router database before buying one. Some popular brands that have wireless routers that work include Asus, Buffalo AirStation, some Linksys routers, and some Netgear routers. In the case of Linksys and Netgear, both manufacturers offer specially marked products that are compatible with open source firmware.
Before installing DD-WRT on a wireless router, keep in mind that flashing third party software will almost always void the warranty. Furthermore, it's possible to render the router useless if the firmware update fails. This is commonly called "bricking a router." Although it's possible to revive a bricked router, the process can be very technical and difficult. However, most people who install DD-WRT do not experience any problems and easily perform the firmware upgrade in 15 minutes.

Downloading and Installing DD-WRT

If the router has already been configured, write down all custom configuration information such as IP addresses, passwords, and wireless keys. The firmware upgrade process results in the loss of all configuration information.

The next step in installing DD-WRT is to consult the router database as indicated above and download directly from the router database. The router database will display the specific instructions and files that are applicable to a specific router. It is very important not to confuse model numbers as getting the wrong files could result in bricking the router.
If the router database says it can be installed using the router's web interface, look at the instructions in the router for upgrading the firmware. Instead of upgrading the firmware with the router manufacturer's version, DD-WRT will be installed instead.
In some cases, DD-WRT cannot be installed with the web interface. Under those circumstances, a TFTP client is used to upgrade the firmware. Instructions will be included in the router database if TFTP is required.

DD-WRT Default Login and Password

After the installation of the new firmware is complete, the router will use its default IP address and subnet. Log into the router via the web, SSH (if enabled) or telnet. The default username is "root" while the default password is "admin." If the firmware version is v24 SP1 or later, a password change is mandatory as part of the login process.
After the DD-WRT password has been change, the best part begins which is configuring the many options that weren't available with the OEM firmware.
